Big Ditch Revitalization Project

The Big Ditch Park Revitalization Project will create permanent improvements to the park, including mitigation of drainage issues and creation of five berm and basin gardens, establishment of native plantings and pollinator-friendly gardens throughout the park, and repair of retaining walls, fencing and handicap ramp. The project will enhance the visitor experience by creating beautiful and welcoming spaces with additional seating (benches and picnic tables), container gardens, and signage.

As discussed in the Town of Silver City Recreation and Park Feasibility Study, recent research has shown “a significant relationship between perceived park benefits and Sense of Community (SOC), which provides support for parks as catalysts to increase SOC in neighborhoods. Urban parks have provided residents and visitors with a place to relax and take a break from everyday life. People are increasingly returning to urban neighborhoods and it is important to provide parks to promote social interactions and connections. They are places where residents congregate for physical activity and social gatherings. Events can attract community members and allow them to create a space that is culturally enriching, which often engenders a stronger sense of belonging and engagement.”

The Big Ditch Revitalization Project will improve this unique public open space by enhancing opportunities for the Silver City/Grant County community to gather in and enjoy the Park and the surrounding riparian ecosystem. The stream-side habitat and lush vegetation of Big Ditch Park and San Vicente Creek offer a rare opportunity to provide a connection to Nature and natural beauty easily accessible from downtown Silver City. Beautification of the Park space and infrastructure will enhance the visitor experience, encourage use of the park for events thereby promoting social interactions and connections, and strengthen the linkages between existing community amenities like the San Vicente Creek trail system, facilities such as the Visitor Center and Main Street Plaza, and downtown businesses.
